The Beginning

Losing around 80 pounds has opened many doors for me, activity wise. I have always been a lover of nature, and hiking is a huge part of that. But I have always been grossly out of shape. My mission starting in December of 2012 was to not only lose the fat, but to gain muscle. I want to be an adventurer. I want to climb Mount Whitney. For those of you that don't know, Mount Whitney is the highest summit in the contiguous United States. Its elevation is 14,505 feet.

Right now I am in no shape to do this. I have no overnight backpacking experience and my elevation hiking is weak. I have only attempted at most a 5 mile hike. This is due to my weight, lack of endurance, and general wimpiness. I intend to change that. I have been seeing a trainer for just over 6 months. My heart is stronger, my muscles are stronger. I have more confidence to get me through tough stretches.

Every weekend we intend to hike longer distances to condition our bodies. We are going to try to hike at higher altitudes to test ourselves. In August we will be camping in Tuolumne Meadows(Elev. 8619 ft) in Yosemite NP. From there we will be taking day hikes that are no less than 8 miles, and the elevations are even higher.

Right now my goal is to do this by my 35th birthday. Kristen thinks we can do it sooner. We shall see.
